Laser Spider Vein Removal - an Alternative to Vein Stripping

What are Spider Veins? Spider veins, also known as “telangiectasias”, are small, distended blood vessels that are visible just beneath the skin. Spider veins most often develop on the face and legs, and these veins are different from the other most common vein disorder—varicose veins. Varicose veins turn bluish and can cause discomfort and even pain; while the removal of spider veins is mostly for cosmetic purposes. You may choose to remove spider veins using several methods; the newest and least invasive of these removal methods is laser spider vein removal. If you are suffering from both varicose and spider veins, your physician will likely recommend vein stripping the varicose veins first. This is because laser spider vein removal will only be a permanent fix when varicose veins are completely absent.

Laser spider vein removal

People who may be afraid of vein stripping as a way to get rid of their varicose and/or spider veins will be relieved to discover how non-invasive laser spider vein removal truly is.

The process is simple:

  • During the treatment, a laser is directed to your skin over the spider veins, causing the veins to coagulate and eventually shrink. Laser spider vein removal works the best with small and medium sized spider veins; larger veins are best treated using sclerotherapy, ,or vein stripping. While you may experience a mild discomfort during the procedure (like a rubber band snapping against your skin), treatments do not require medication or anesthetics.
  • Immediately after your laser procedure, your spider veins will be darker and more visible; however over a period of two to six weeks, the veins will usually fade. It may take several laser treatments to produce the desired results. It usually takes three treatments to completely remove spider veins.
  • Laser spider vein removal is almost always the preferred treatment of spider veins on the face. Minor bruising is normal, and you can apply makeup immediately after the treatment for a presentable, smooth appearance.
